Archaeological Exploration - Venpakkam (வெண்பாக்கம் கள ஆய்வு)
Megalithic burial sites of Venpakkam

South Indian Social History Research Institute’s researchers S. Ramachandran, S. Sowmiya Narayanan and G. Saminathan conducted an archaeological exploration and found a rich megalithic burial site situated adjacent to Venpakkam village in Chengalpat taluk of Kanchipuram district. This site has already been noticed by the archaeologists and listed as a megalithic burial site. But, its potentiality has not been properly explored and utilized by archaeologists. The area covers around 100 acres land, a part of it being notified as a reserved forest area and the other parts have been converted into agricultural and habitational areas. Of late, small scale stone quarrying by indiscriminate elements is going on in this area. So, there is lurking danger of this site being lost to posterity.

The megalithic burial types include Cairn circles, Dolmenoids cists, Menhirs, etc. One single structure seems to have been a capstone, the cap portion missing. Many urn burials are also noticed. It is possible that the area will yield paleaolithic remnants, as some tool-flakes are noticed on the surface. If archaeologically explored and excavations conducted, it is certain that this site will yield rich data and such an effort will surely be rewarding.

The exploration was conducted on 25th and 27th of July 2008. This site is worth protecting as an archaeological site.
